The standards require a third party to verify that the CMMC cyber security practices are implemented and institutionalized by all Prime and Sub contractors. The CMMC standards are spread across five levels and 17 domains (these span each level). Each domain is made up of processes and practices that must be in place to demonstrate competency; the level of competency a contractor must meet is based on the depth and breadth of federal contract information (FCI) and controlled unclassified information (CUI) held on its systems. CMMC is a requirement for all NEW DOD contracts and applies to both the Prime and Sub contractors.
